Madhubani

The ancient tradition of Bihar

Madhubani, which means "Forest of Honey”, is a region in the Northern part of Bihar with a regional identity and language of more than two thousand years. The ancient tradition of wall paintings emerged out of women's craving for religiousness. The paintings depict scenes of nature, gods from ancient epics etc. No space is left empty and gaps are filled with flowers, animals and birds. Madhubani paintings as a domestic activity were unknown to the outside world until a massive earthquake in 1934, when houses and walls tumbled down.

Ladakh, "Land of High Passes”, is a region in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. It is inhabited by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan discent. The architecture traces the history of mainly Buddhist religion. Buddhism has been practiced here for the last fifteen centures and the place has a kinship with Tibet because of the religion. The most noticeable feature is the omamentation in the form of sculptures, wall paintings and motifs. These show a religious zeal and are colourful to compensate for the dullness of the terrain.

A traditional houses of Gujarat

Bhungas are traditional houses unique to the Kutch region in Gujarat. It is constructed using locally available materials like clay, bamboo, timbre etc. A lipan or lime plastering is applied on the walls and mirror work adorns the interior walls of a bhunga. This room is our effort to replicate a bhunga, done by craftsmen from a village in Kutch.

A component of ancient Benhali Narative Art

In Sanskrit language "Patta" literally means "Cloth" and "Chitra" means picture. Most of these stories depict Hindu deities, based in Eastern Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha. Patachitra are a component of ancient Benhali narative art, originally serving as a visual device during the performance of a song. This art form is known for it`s excelent play of natural colours and it's roots can be traced to the Ist century AD as mentioned in Buddhist literature. The star exponent of this art form was Jamini Roy whose work has been depicted in this room.

The ancient city of Kashi or Varanasi has been a centre of learning and civilisation for over 3000yrs. It is the ultimate pilgrimage for Hindus down the ages. They beleive that salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth can be attained if one dies in Varanasi. The river Ganges is believed to have the power to wash away the sins of mortals. These lines by Mark Twain says it all "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older than even legend and looks twice as old as well as all of them put together."

Sanchi

The Ashoka pillar as the National emblem of India

Sanchi was virtually forgotten after the 13th century until 1818, when General Taylor a British officer rediscovered it. Sanchi is a Buddhist complex and the remains of two prominent Buddhist monks where found here. The Great Stupa here is the oldest stone structure in India. The complex was commissioned by Emperor Ashoka in 3rd century B.C. The Ashoka pillar erected here with four lions has been adopted as the National emblem of India. Various Jatakas,that is,Buddhist moral tales relating to the former lives of the Buddha are carved here.

Warli folk-paintings of Northern Maharashtra

The room depicts the Warli folk-paintings of the Warlitribe in Northern Maharashtra. Its roots can be traced to 10th century AD, used by tribesmen to embellish the walls of village houses. It was the only means of transmitting folklore. These paintings do not depict any god but depict the daily life ‘and social events. They are painted on mud walls in one colour only. It is rare to see a straight line in Warli art. Inspite of being located'close to Mumbai this tribe has resisted urbanization.
